Challenge.

Subway enlisted the help of Aura’s packaging consultancy team to help secure solutions for two key challenges on the horizon.

  • Upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks with eco-modulation across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and European territories.
  • Widening bans on single-use plastics, with a focus on food service packaging, creating an increased requirement for recycled content integration.

Solution.

We analyzed packaging regulation implications and reviewed post-consumer recycled material (PCR) potential/availability, waste hierarchy and closed-loop models.

An evaluation of the brand’s current packaging portfolio was also conducted, plotting results against individual market legislation. This allowed us to recommend changes and priorities by SKU.

It also included regional complexities and a laser focus on key areas of legislation including EPR, eco-modulated fees, single-use plastic bans and labeling requirements.

Benefit.

Aura recommended actions and timeframes to ensure Subway’s current and future compliance and tax/fee mitigation. We also developed a regional strategy, focussing on environmental/packaging targets.

As a result:

This work provided the catalyst for voluntary and industry-led commitments and it underpinned the strategic roadmaps to 2025 and beyond.

Such as the phasing out of many single-use plastics, up to 75% recycling rate of plastics by 2023 and standardization of EPR frameworks.

Impact.

A regional sustainable packaging strategy for voluntary and industry-led commitments.
